This multi-colored braided cast on is beautiful and will add a unique touch to any project. Try using it for mitten cuffs, sock cuffs, purse tops, sleeve cuffs...the possibilities are endless!
Begin by placing a slip knot made from 2 colors of yarn on the left needle.

Place
the darker yarn over your index finger and the lighter yarn over your thumb.
Cast on one stitch (dark
yarn) using a modified Finger
and Thumb cast on method. *Insert the needle up through the yarn on the
thumb, down through the front of the loop on the index finger and back down
through the loop on the thumb.
Switch
the yarn so that the dark yarn is now around the thumb and the light yarn
is around the index finger. NOTE: Always make sure that the yarn being passed
from the index finger to the thumb is being passed over the yarn on
the thumb. In this example, the dark yarn is passed over the light
yarn and placed on the thumb. The light yarn is then placed on the index finger.
Now that the yarn has
been exchanged between the fingers, cast on one stitch (light yarn) using
the modified Finger and Thumb method (as above).
Continue
casting on in this manner, switching yarn colors with each stitch.
As you work this cast
on, you will see a beautiful multi-colored braid taking shape. Don't be concerned
if the free strands of working yarn in the palm of your hand get twisted.
You can untwist them when you have finished casting on or at any time if it
interfers with casting on.
