How
to Knit
Knitting
After casting
on the correct number of stitches (as called for by your pattern):
Step 1:
Hold
the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Insert the right needle
through the first stitch on the left needle (the first stitch is the stitch
closest to the end of the needle) making sure the working yarn (the yarn coming
from the yarn ball) is held to the back of the needles. Note: the right needle
is inserted through the front of the stitch loop and underneath the left needle.
Step 2:
Wind
the working yarn (yarn coming from yarn ball) around the right needle from left
to right.
Step 3:
Using
your right hand, bring the right needle with the loop of yarn through the stitch.
This forms a new stitch on the right needle.
Step 4:
Slip
the original stitch off the left needle and tighten the new stitch on the right
needle by pulling on the working yarn.
Repeat Steps 1 thru 4 until all of the stitches on the left needle have been transferred to the right needle. This completes Row 1 of knitting.
To begin Row 2, turn the
work and transfer the needle with the stitches on it to the left hand and continue
working Steps 1 thru 4.
Reading Your Knitting
The
picture illustrates knit stitches. Each individual knit stitch in your work
should look like the stitch outlined in blue.
