Slip Stitch
(abbreviation: sl st)
The slip
is a fundamental crochet stitch. It is used to join work, bind off stitches,
reinforce edges or carry yarn to a different working position without adding
extra height.
To
begin practicing the slip stitch, make a length of foundation chain (if
you do not know how to make a foundation chain, see chain
stitch).
Insert the hook through the loop of the 2nd chain stitch from front to back (see illustration).
Loop
the working yarn over the hook and draw the hook through both the
chain stitch and the original loop on the hook (see illustration).
You have just made one slip stitch and have one loop remaining on the hook.
Continue working into each of the remaining chain stitches in the foundation row in the same manner as above (i.e. work next into the 3rd stitch, then the 4th stitch, 5th stitch, etc.).
After you have practiced the slip stitch, you are now ready to try single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet or triple crochet!
