Teen Fashion. Bhutanese with a splash of Tibetan...color is it!l

MPLS (May-00) - Vibrant Safflower, Orange and Pink. These colors are it! Ever since the buzz about Tibet generated by movies like Scorcese's 1998, Kundun, Dalia Lama golds, reds, and saffrons have been seeping into the fashion colorways. Celebrities like Richard Gere are followers of the Dalai Lama--head of the dominant Gelukpa, or "Yellow Hat" order of Tibetan Buddhists. The Dalai Lama is believed by his followers to be the 14th reincarnation of the Buddha of Compassion, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a celebrity, and now he is even a fashion trendsetter...go figure! :-). I sure do love the pink and oranges though!
Indian, Bhutanese and Tibetan clothing are also the inspirations for Donna Karan's Fall 2000 line. Loose robes are worn with multiple layers and topped off with Pashmina's in colors of saffron, burnt orange, merlot. Personally, I think Pashmina's are O.U.T, OUT! Grandma and messy...not very body conscious or hip at all. But, whatever.
These
trendy colors can be made in your own dye pot using safflower petals. The
safflower plant is a remarkable dyeplant. By following different dye methods,
both a yellow and a pink or orange-red can be extracted from it's petals.
The picture shows the colors that the safflower plant creates when dyed on
silk.
If
you don't feel like dyeing yarn, try the WorldKnit.com yarn colors of Sunburst
(Magic Variegated), Hot
Tomale (Magic Solid), Burnt
Orange (Fantasy Naturale), Orange
(Boston Solids), or the fabulous Safflower
(Adriafil Ibiza). Any of these yarns can be knit up into a great summer
tank like the one in the picture. You can even layer it with the great new
retro/geometric silks! Too Cool!
For ultimate glam, complete your outfit with outrageous nail polish like the fluorescent orange from Versace!
OK, so now for what is definitely OUT of fashion...butterfly
hair clips (of any color)!
